SILVIA BUSUIOC and RICHARD-JOHN SEIKALY in rehearsed reading at ACTORS' STUDIO L.A.

Posted by AVAnti Productions on June 6, 2015 at 9:45 AM Comments comments (0)

AVANTI P&M is very pleased to announce that two of our L.A. based actors, SILVIA BUSUIOC and RICHARD-JOHN SEIKALY, performed in a rehearsed reading of

IN DEFENCE OF INVISIBILITY

at ACTORS' STUDIO Los Angeles.

SYNOPSIS:

In Defense of Common Invincibility takes a different look at the superhero genre. It basically blows it to pieces.

Nathaniel Hawthorn’s quote sums up some of the ideas in the beginning of the play: “The greatest obstacle to being heroic is the doubt whether one may not be going to prove one's self a fool; the truest heroism is to resist the doubt; and the profoundest wisdom, to know when it ought to be resisted, and when it be obeyed.”

The play explores people’s reliance on heroes to fix everything, instead of going out and fixing things themselves. The theme of the play is that people have to come together to solve the problems of the world and not try to do things all by themselves in the “heroic” way. The real heroism is in joining forces and realizing you don’t have all of the answers.

The play concerns Lenny and Jack, both 27, just regular guys that live in Los Angeles and work at a restaurant. They live in a world where there are superheroes and where a person can read a book to gain superhuman powers, but only a very small percentage of people are able to do it. They have been working at becoming superheroes for ten years and still don’t have any powers. The central conflict of the play is at first Lenny and Jack against a world that they see as flawed and evil, but then changes to be about Lenny and Jack versus each other. Jack begins wondering if there is evil in the world or whether evil and good are connected and the same thing. He tells Lenny that a world without evil is absurd and could never exist. He asks him - what are we fighting for? The conflict heightens even more when Jack walks in on Lenny and a girl. Jack and Lenny have sworn off girls for ten years saying that they have no time for them because they have to concentrate on their powers. Jack says that he wants just a normal life and quits. The conflict later becomes whether Jack will indeed quit or keep trying when they find out that there is a war going on and that it looks like the superheroes can’t win it. Lenny says that they have to do something even if they don’t have any powers, that they have to try to do something to help no matter what.
